In 2014, the CFPB partnered with the Attorney General of Florida in filing a lawsuit against the Hoffman Law Group for “charging homeowners thousands of dollars in upfront fees to join mass-litigation lawsuits” as part of a foreclosure relief scam. In 2015, a federal judge entered a $27.7 million judgment against the firm and affiliated companies.

  • “Running the show at the Hoffman Law Group, which is accused in a federal civil lawsuit of charging homeowners thousands of dollars in upfront fees to join mass-litigation lawsuits, was allegedly a man 30 years Hoffman’s junior and already known by financial regulators in at least two states.” [Kimberly Miller, “Hoffman Law Group misled hundreds of homeowners, complaint says”, Palm Beach Post, 07/24/14]
  • “‘Run by veterans of loan modification schemes, the Hoffman Law Group Enterprise preys on distressed homeowners by failing to provide promised relief from unaffordable mortgage payments and foreclosures,’ court documents filed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Florida Attorney General say.” [Kimberly Miller, “Hoffman Law Group misled hundreds of homeowners, complaint says”, Palm Beach Post, 07/24/14]
  • “The Southern District Court of Florida found Hoffman Law Group, a firm in North Palm Beach, Fla., and its affiliates liable for $11.7 million in illegal upfront fees. The lawsuit said the firm charged consumers for foreclosure mitigation services that often went nowhere. In addition to the liability, the firm was ordered to pay a $10 million civil money penalty to the CFPB, and a $6 million penalty to the state.” [Colin Wilhelm, “CFPB, Florida Win Case Over Alleged Foreclosure Relief Scam,” National Mortgage News, 05/29/15]
