Sen. Collins Should Reject Trump Treasury Nominee After Revelation HIs Bank Used Unethical Foreclosure Tactic in Maine

Mnuchin Has Admitted He Mislead Senators but Won’t Back Down from His Claim That His Bank Did Not Use “Robo-Signing” to Expedite Foreclosures, Despite Mounting Evidence from States, Including Maine

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to new evidence, this time from Maine, indicating once again that Trump Treasury nominee Steven Mnuchin was not truthful with senators about his bank’s use of “robo-signing” to expedite foreclosures, Allied Progress released the following statement urging Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) to oppose Mnuchin’s nomination:

Steven Mnuchin has rightfully been under fire for blatantly deceiving senators about his bank’s use of robo-signing to expedite foreclosures and push hard-working American families out of their homes. With new developments showing the shady robo-signing practice was used in Maine on Mnuchin’s watch, Sen. Collins owes it to her constituents to oppose his nomination for Treasury Secretary,” said Allied Progress Executive Director Karl Frisch.

He continued, “Each day it becomes clearer that Mnuchin has been dishonest with the Senate from the outset of his confirmation process. Senators like Collins need to show some independence and backbone by standing up to President Trump rather than cowering in his shadow and allowing dishonest cabinet nominees like Mnuchin to be confirmed. If Sen. Collins puts the best interests of all Mainers first, she will vote against Mnuchin’s confirmation for Treasury Secretary. He has made a career out of protecting the rigged economic system that made him a fortune at the expense of hard-working Americans.”

The request follows the release of a report earlier today by Allied Progress that unearthed new evidence that Mnuchin mislead senators about his bank’s use of “robo-signing” to expedite foreclosures in several states. It comes on the heels of a boycott by Senate Finance Committee Democrats sparked by Mnuchin’s lack of honesty with the committee following reports from both The Columbus Dispatch and The Intercept that revealed Mnuchin willfully misled senators about the foreclosure practices of his former bank. Contrary to his repeated denials, OneWest did, in fact, “robo-sign” foreclosure documents.
